Local knowledge

Where is White City, and how long does it take us to get there?

White City is a small unincorporated community in St. Lucie County, right on the southern edge of Fort Pierce. The 2020 census counted 3,779 people on about 5 square miles. Most homes here carry a Fort Pierce mailing address, so tell us on the call that you are in White City and give the nearest cross street on Midway Road, Oleander Avenue or Selvitz Road. That saves a wrong turn.

From central Port St. Lucie our usual run is up Airoso Boulevard and St. James Drive, then west on Midway Road. It is about 9 to 10 miles and close to 20 minutes in normal traffic. Midway Road also has one of the few I-95 interchanges in the county, so if we are coming off the highway from another job, you are still a short hop away.

Why do so many White City houses still have their original locks?

Because a lot of the houses are old. Census estimates put White City at about 2,110 homes, almost all of them single-family houses. More than 4 in 10 were built before 1980, and close to 500 date from the 1950s and 1960s. Land listings here have run from about half an acre to more than 1.7 acres, and subdivisions include Park Trail Acres and North Fork Estates. A lock that has turned twice a day for 40 years is simply worn out inside.

Here is what that looks like on a call. The key only turns if you pull the door toward you first. The deadbolt stops halfway because the door has dropped on its hinges and the strike plate no longer lines up. The key is a copy of a copy, so the cuts are rounded and it slips. Or the back door and garage entry door still have the old key-in-knob lock with no deadbolt at all.

Most of this is cheap to fix. Worn pins get replaced during a rekey. A sagging door often just needs the strike plate moved or longer hinge screws. A missing deadbolt can be added. We tell you which fix you actually need before we touch anything.

  • The key has to be wiggled or pulled to turn
  • The deadbolt needs a shoulder push on the door to lock
  • New copies from the hardware store will not work
  • The finish on the cylinder is worn down to bare metal

How did White City get its name?

White City is named after the Great White City, the display of white buildings and electric lights at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. Danish settlers inspired by that fair developed the community, and Midway Road takes its name from the Midway Plaisance, the fair’s entertainment strip.

Some of that early building still stands. The Captain Hammond House on Citrus Avenue was finished in 1902 by Danish craftsmen and was added to the National Register in 1990. White City Park, 17 acres on the North Fork of the St. Lucie River along West Midway Road, keeps an old Florida feel.

Why does a locksmith care? Older frame houses do not always have standard doors. The door may be an odd thickness, or have an old bore hole that a new lock will not cover. We look at the door first and tell you plainly whether a standard Kwikset or Schlage will fit or whether it needs a different setup.

What do White City homeowners usually call us for?

Most calls here are planned work, not emergencies.

Rekeying after you buy

You do not know how many keys the last owners gave out. A rekey changes the pins so every old key stops working, and you keep your current hardware.

Replacing worn-out locks

When a lock is too far gone to rekey or the finish has failed, we fit a new knob, lever or deadbolt and set it to your key.

Detached garages and workshops

If your lot has a detached garage or workshop with its own keyed door, we rekey it to match the house, or add a keyed deadbolt if the door can take one. One key runs everything.

Locked out of the house

Stepped out to the mailbox and the door shut behind you? We try damage-free entry first and ask for proof that you live there before we open anything.

Back doors with no deadbolt

Older back doors and garage entry doors often have only a knob lock. Adding a deadbolt with a solid strike plate is one of the best upgrades for an older house.

Car and truck keys

Lost the only key? We cut and program transponder keys and fobs for most makes. We do not work on BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volkswagen, Porsche or Mini.

What should you do with the locks after buying an older home in White City?

Walk every door

Count the front door, back door, sliding glass door, garage entry door and any door on a detached garage or workshop. Note which ones have a deadbolt.

Gather the keys you were given

Collect keys from the closing, the realtor and any you find in drawers. You will still rekey, but it helps us plan how many cylinders to bring parts for.

Call for a quote

Tell us the door count, the lock brands if you can see them, and whether you want one key for everything. We give you the total before we drive out.

Rekey or replace on site

We check each lock. Good ones get rekeyed. Worn or broken ones get replaced, and only after you say yes.

Test every new key

Before we leave, you try each new key in every door, including the outbuilding, so you know it all works.

We work early mornings and late evenings, 6 days a week: Sunday to Thursday from 7am to 11pm, and Friday from 7am to 5pm. We are closed on Saturday. For planned work like a full-house rekey, Sunday through Thursday gives you the most choice of times.

Our technician arrives in a marked van and shows ID at the door. If your street is hard to find, give us a landmark. White City Park on West Midway Road is an easy one.

White City borders south Fort Pierce, which we also serve. Other St. Lucie County areas on our route include Port St. Lucie and River Park.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Is White City part of Fort Pierce?

No. White City is an unincorporated community in St. Lucie County that sits on Fort Pierce's southern border. Most addresses use Fort Pierce and the 34982 ZIP code, which is why it helps to tell us you are in White City and name the nearest cross street, like Midway Road or Oleander Avenue, when you call.

How far is White City from Port St. Lucie for a locksmith?

Plan on 9 to 10 miles and close to 20 minutes from the middle of Port St. Lucie by way of Airoso Boulevard, St. James Drive and Midway Road. We give you an honest arrival estimate on the call based on where our technician is at that moment, not a promise we cannot keep.

Should I rekey or replace the locks on an older White City house?

If the locks turn smoothly and you like how they look, rekey them. It costs less and every old key stops working. If a key sticks, the deadbolt binds, or the finish is worn through, replacing usually makes more sense. We check each lock on site and tell you which way to go before any work starts.

Can my detached garage or workshop use the same key as my house?

Usually, yes, as long as the outbuilding door has a keyed knob, lever or deadbolt from a common brand like Kwikset or Schlage. We rekey it to match your house key. If the door only has a hasp, we can talk about adding a keyed deadbolt if the door is solid enough. Padlocks are not part of our services.

My back door only has a knob lock. Is that normal for older homes here?

It is common in older houses, especially on back doors and garage entry doors. A knob lock on its own is easier to force than a deadbolt. We can add a deadbolt, key it to match your other doors, and set the strike plate with longer screws that reach into the door frame.

What do you need from me to open my house in White City?

A photo ID and something tying you to the address, such as a lease, a utility bill, closing papers or mail with your name on it. We ask everyone, every time. If your ID is locked inside the house, tell us on the call so we can work out how to check it once the door is open.
