Hobe Sound is an unincorporated community in southeastern Martin County, about 12 miles southeast of Stuart, so the Martin County Sheriff handles policing. US 1 carries most of the shops and services, while a small row of cafes and boutiques sits on Dixie Highway near Bridge Road. Bridge Road runs east under a canopy of old banyan trees to Jupiter Island and Hobe Sound Beach.
Homes here span a long stretch of time. In the 1920s, developers renamed the town Picture City and laid out the Zeus Park neighborhood with streets named for Greek and Roman gods. That boom fell apart after the 1928 hurricane. Today you also find gated communities such as Hobe Sound Golf Club, Loblolly Pines, The Medalist and Banner Lake. Across the water, the Town of Jupiter Island has just over 800 residents and is home to some of the wealthiest people in the United States.
Hobe Sound skews older. The median age was 56.9 in the 2020 census, and about a third of residents are 65 or older. On census day that year, about 1 in 6 Hobe Sound homes had nobody living in them.
