Quick answer

Tradition Locksmith serves River Park, a census-designated place of about 6,500 people that sits outside Port St. Lucie city limits, west of US 1, with the North Fork running through it. Most homes here date from the 1960s and 1970s, and about a quarter are mobile homes. We rekey or replace worn locks, fix sliding glass and storm door locks, and handle lockouts.

What does a River Park locksmith deal with most?

As a River Park locksmith, most of what we see is age. The typical River Park home dates to 1975, by Census survey numbers, and about two out of three were built in the 1960s and 1970s. A lot of front doors still have the knob and deadbolt that came with the house, or the replacements someone picked up in the 1980s. Those locks have worked tens of thousands of times in Florida heat and river damp.

The other big part is mobile homes. Out of about 2,950 homes in River Park, Census data counts about 720 mobile homes, roughly one in four. Their doors and locks are a different size and build from a standard house door, which changes what fits and what we bring.

River Park is small. It covers about 2.5 square miles and had 6,514 people at the 2020 census. Most of it is homes, and we treat it that way: house and mobile home lockouts, rekeys and lock repairs, with fewer of the storefront and office jobs we do along the busier parts of US 1.

Local knowledge

Where River Park is, and why it is not part of Port St. Lucie

River Park is older than the city around it. Magazine publisher Gardner Cowles and his investors recorded the River Park plat in 1953, the first house went up in 1956, and about 42 families lived there by 1958. That year General Development Corporation bought land from the Cowles group and went on to build Port St. Lucie. When the city incorporated in 1961, River Park stayed out at the request of its residents, and it is still unincorporated St. Lucie County today.

The community sits on the west side of US 1, with the city of Port St. Lucie to the south and west and White City to the north. The North Fork of the St. Lucie River runs through the middle of it. Prima Vista Boulevard is the main road across, and side streets like NE Riomar Drive, SE Hidden River Drive, SE Naranja Avenue and SE Camino Street fill in around it. Mailing addresses say Port St. Lucie, with ZIP 34952 or 34983, but the county handles local government here, not the city.

From the City Hall area, the quickest route runs up Airoso Boulevard to Prima Vista, about 5 miles and 10 minutes. Follow Prima Vista west past the Turnpike and it turns into St. Lucie West Boulevard, so St. Lucie West is about 5 miles away. White City is about 5 miles north.

Rekey or replace: how we decide on River Park locks

We rekey a lock that is sound when only the keys are the problem, and we replace a lock that is failing. We check every lock before we tell you which it is.

Rekeying changes the pins inside the cylinder so a new key works and every old key stops. It costs less than new hardware and keeps the look of your door. But a rekey cannot save a lock that is falling apart. In a house from the 1970s, we often find a deadbolt that will rekey fine next to a knob lock that should go.

  • Rekey: the lock turns smoothly, the bolt throws all the way, and you just need new keys
  • Rekey: you bought the house or a renter moved out and you do not know who has keys
  • Replace: the cylinder spins, the knob is loose, or the latch sticks halfway
  • Replace: there is rust inside, or a part is cracked or missing
  • Replace: the door has only a knob lock and you want a real deadbolt

Sliding glass doors, storm doors and other River Park problem spots

Front doors are only part of it. These are the other locks that tend to fail in older homes here.

Sliding glass door latch

Older sliders sag as the rollers wear, and the latch stops reaching its catch. Sometimes an adjustment fixes it, sometimes the latch needs replacing. For extra security we can fit a keyed slider lock or a floor-mounted foot bolt.

Storm and screen door handles

The handle and latch on an outer storm door are light hardware and wear out fast. We can swap the handle set, and if it has a keyed lock, key it to match your main door.

Mobile home entry doors

Many mobile homes use a combined knob and deadbolt made for thinner doors. A standard house lock often will not fit, so mention the home type up front and the right parts come along in the van.

Back and utility room doors

In older homes the back door often has a knob lock only. Adding a deadbolt there is one of the simplest ways to make a house harder to get into.

Shed and carport doors

We can rekey the shed or storage room lock so it uses the same key as the house, which means one less key on the ring.

Why keys start to drag and snap in homes along the North Fork

Damp air off the river is the usual cause. River Park is low land with the North Fork running through it, and moisture gets into lock cylinders and latches. Over the years it mixes with dust and old grease into a sludge that slows the pins. Keys start to drag, then stick, then snap. Steel parts can rust inside even when the outside of the lock still looks fine.

You can slow this down. Use a dry graphite or lock-rated spray, not oil, which collects dirt. If a key needs force to turn, stop and call before it breaks off in the lock. When you do replace a lock near the water, ask about hardware with better corrosion resistance. It costs a little more but tends to last longer here.

Call and we will quote the total before we drive out. Sun to Thu 7am to 11pm, Fri 7am to 5pm.

Do not force a stuck key

If a key will not turn, do not use pliers or push harder. A snapped key turns a quick rekey into a repair. Try a lock spray, wiggle gently, and if that does not work, call us and we will pull the cylinder and sort it out.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Is River Park part of Port St. Lucie?

No. River Park is governed by St. Lucie County, not the city, even though the mail says Port St. Lucie and the ZIP is 34952 or 34983. Its residents chose not to join the new city when it incorporated in 1961. For locksmith work it makes no difference, and we are about 10 minutes away.

Can you rekey a mobile home lock in River Park?

Usually, yes. Many mobile home locks have a standard cylinder we can rekey on the spot. Some older or very cheap ones are not worth it, and replacing them with a lock made for a mobile home door is the better buy. Say so on the phone and the van will carry mobile home hardware.

My house still has its original locks from the 1970s. Should I replace them all?

Not always. Some older locks are well built and just need new keys. Others are worn, loose or rusted inside and should go. We test each one, rekey the solid ones and quote any that need replacing before we start. You only pay for what actually needs doing, not a whole new set.

Why does my key stick more in summer?

Summer brings the heat, heavy rain and humidity, and River Park sits right on the North Fork. Damp air plus old grease and grit makes the pins in your lock drag, and doors can swell a little, which puts pressure on the bolt. A dry lock spray helps. If the key still sticks, have it looked at before it snaps.

Can my storm door use the same key as my front door?

Often, yes. If your storm door handle has a keyed cylinder, we can usually rekey it to match your front door, so one key works both. Some cheap storm door handles have cylinders that cannot be rekeyed. In that case we can fit a new handle set that takes your key, and we quote it before we start.
