Why does the age of a Port St. Lucie house matter to a locksmith?

When you call a locksmith in Port St. Lucie, the year your house was built tells us a lot before we ever see your door. This city grew fast. It had 204,851 people at the 2020 census, and the Census Bureau put it at about 268,062 by July 2025. From July 2024 to July 2025 it grew 3.5 percent, the fastest rate of any U.S. city with at least 250,000 people.

Half the homes in Port St. Lucie were built in 2002 or later, according to Census survey data. More than a third of the city’s homes went up between 2000 and 2009, and about one in five has gone up since 2010. Fewer than one in ten was built before 1980.

So our days swing between two kinds of houses. On the older east side, on the streets General Development Corporation laid out, locks are older, keys are copies of copies, and doors have lived through a few hurricanes. Out west, in places like Tradition, Riverland and PGA Village Verano, the houses are new, the locks are builder grade, and owners rarely know who else has a key.

Local knowledge

How Port St. Lucie was built, and where we drive

Port St. Lucie started as a planned city. General Development Corporation bought land along the North Fork of the St. Lucie River in 1958 and opened its first bridge over the river in 1959. About 250 homes were there in early 1961, and the city incorporated on April 27 of that year. The city began in what is now Sandpiper Bay, and some of its first small homes still stand on SE Pruitt Road and SE Morningside Boulevard. GDC planned a city of about 80 square miles, and its single-family lots kept filling in for decades. Census data shows the 1980s alone added more homes here than the 1960s and 1970s put together.

The second wave went west. Core Communities took on St. Lucie West in the early 1990s and later Tradition, a community of about 8,200 acres west of the I-95 interchange at Gatlin Boulevard and Tradition Parkway. More recently, GL Homes has been building Riverland, a 4,000-acre community for active adults, and Kolter has built PGA Village Verano, a gated golf community. Wylder, between Midway Road and Glades Cut-Off Road, is planned for about 3,400 homesites. In ZIP 34987, which takes in much of the new west side, about four in ten homes were built in 2020 or later.

We are based in Port St. Lucie, so we are never far. From the City Hall area on Port St. Lucie Boulevard, Tradition is about 7 miles, the St. Lucie West neighborhoods run 5 to 7, and unincorporated River Park is about 5 miles north, off Prima Vista Boulevard.

From the older sections to the new builds, we know these locks.

Original GDC streets or the new west side: which lock problems show up?

Older homes on the GDC grid

  • Keys that only work with a jiggle, from worn pins and worn copies
  • A different key for the front, back and garage doors
  • Back or side doors with a knob lock and no deadbolt
  • Sliding glass door latches that no longer catch
  • Locks so worn or rusty inside that a rekey will not last

New builds west of I-95

  • Builder-grade locks, often Kwikset or similar, usually keyed alike
  • No record of who got keys during construction and closing
  • Only a knob lock on the garage-to-house door
  • Keypad and smart deadbolt requests on move-in day
  • HOA pool gate locks and fobs, which only the HOA can have changed

Which Port St. Lucie roads do we cover most?

Most of our driving happens on these corridors, and each has its usual calls.

US 1

The city’s stretch runs from the Martin County line up to Midway Road and is mostly strip malls and shopping centers. Storefront lockouts, glass door locks and rekeys when a shop changes hands are common here.

Port St. Lucie Boulevard

SR 716 runs from US 1 to the Turnpike and crosses the North Fork near Sandpiper Bay, where the city began. Homes on both sides bring steady lockout and rekey calls.

Gatlin Boulevard and Tradition Parkway

They meet I-95 at exit 118 and lead into Tradition and the Cleveland Clinic Martin Health campus in the Tradition Center for Innovation. Expect new-home rekeys and parking lot car lockouts.

St. Lucie West Boulevard

Exit 121 off I-95, with hotels, restaurants, a movie theater and office suites near the ramp, and Clover Park a short drive north. Condo lockouts and office calls are common.

Crosstown Parkway

The newest crossing of the North Fork, opened all the way to US 1 in 2019. Along with Prima Vista Boulevard and Port St. Lucie Boulevard, it is how we get between the west side and the river neighborhoods.

Becker Road

I-95 exit 114 and Turnpike exit 138 at the south end of the city. Village Parkway runs north from here through Southern Grove, a jobs corridor that has drawn Amazon, Costco and FedEx. Warehouses and offices like these are where keypad entry and master key systems pay off.

Should you rekey a new build in Tradition or Riverland?

Yes, and the sooner the better. A new house is not new to its locks. Keys pass through the builder, the trades, the walk-through and the closing, and builder locks are usually keyed alike across the house. Handy, but you cannot know who else holds that key.

Rekeying fixes it without tossing good hardware. We swap the pin stacks in each lock so one new key runs every door and the builder’s keys go dead. A keypad or smart deadbolt for the front door can go in on the same visit, with the other doors keyed to match. Our pages on rekeying and lock changes and smart lock installation explain both.

  • Count the outside doors, and do not forget the side door and the one from the garage
  • Tell us the brand on the locks, such as Kwikset or Schlage
  • Check your HOA rules if you plan to change the look of the front door hardware

Same name, different business

Our name is Tradition Locksmith, and Tradition is also the big community off Tradition Parkway. We are an independent mobile locksmith with no tie to the Tradition development, its builders or its HOAs. Tradition is simply one of many neighborhoods on our route.

What goes wrong with locks on Port St. Lucie's older streets?

Port St. Lucie took direct hits from Hurricane Frances and Hurricane Jeanne in 2004 and Hurricane Wilma in 2005. Census data shows more than 25,000 of the city’s homes were built before 1990, so a lot of houses on the east side, in ZIP codes like 34952 and 34983 where the median home dates to around 1990, stood through all three. Doors that lived through that, plus years of summer heat, often shift a little. The deadbolt starts to drag, or it only locks if you push or lift the door.

First we check whether the trouble is the lock or the door. Moving a strike plate often fixes a dragging bolt for far less than a new lock. If the cylinder itself is worn, a rekey with fresh keys usually brings it back. If it is cracked, rusted inside or missing parts, we show you why it should be replaced and quote it before we touch it.

  • Bolt only throws when you push the door: usually alignment, not the lock
  • Key goes in but will not turn all the way: worn pins or a worn key
  • Key broke off in the cylinder: we pull it out and cut a new one
  • Slider latch will not catch: often an adjustment, sometimes a new latch

FAQ

Questions people ask

I live in Tradition. Does your company work for the developer or my HOA?

No. We took the name from the area we work in, but there is no business tie. We are an independent mobile locksmith, and we take no orders from the developer, the builders or any Tradition HOA. You hire us yourself for your own home, and we treat a Tradition address the same as any other street in the city.

Which Port St. Lucie ZIP codes do you serve?

Every one of them: 34952, 34953 and 34983 through 34988. That covers the older east side along US 1, St. Lucie West, Tradition, Riverland, PGA Village Verano and the newer areas toward Midway Road. We also go to unincorporated neighborhoods with Port St. Lucie mailing addresses, such as River Park.

My builder gave me the keys. Do I still need to rekey?

We recommend it. While a house is being built and sold, its keys can pass through the builder, subcontractors and the sales team, and you cannot know how many copies exist. Rekeying makes every one of those keys useless while you keep the new hardware. It usually costs less than buying new locks.

Can you make a car key in Port St. Lucie if I lost every key?

For most makes and models, yes. A new transponder key, remote head key or smart key gets cut and programmed right at your car once you show the title or registration and your ID. German brands are the exception: BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volkswagen, Porsche and Mini. Check your vehicle first with our car key finder.

How late can I call for a lockout in Port St. Lucie?

Sunday through Thursday we work from 7am until 11pm. Friday we work 7am to 5pm, and we are closed on Saturday. Locked out late on a weeknight? Call before 11pm, and you will hear the price and our arrival time on the same call.

Can you fix the keypad on my garage door?

A wireless keypad outside the big garage door is part of the garage door opener, and the opener maker or a garage door company handles those. Our part is the house door inside the garage. We rekey it, add a deadbolt to it, or fit a keypad deadbolt there, which gets you in by code when your keys are sitting on the counter.
