What a locksmith in Stuart, FL handles for shops and homes

A locksmith in Stuart, FL needs to be as ready for a shop door as for a front door. Stuart is the county seat of Martin County, with a working downtown full of shops, restaurants and offices, and county offices and medical practices nearby. Around all of that are condo buildings, older houses and busy marinas.

The housing here is not like Port St. Lucie. Census estimates show more than half of Stuart’s homes sit in buildings with five or more units, so condos and apartments are a big share of the home side. The city also has several hundred homes built before 1940, and about half of all its homes went up in the 1970s and 1980s.

Each of those brings its own lock problems. Below is what we look at when the call comes from a shop on Osceola Street, a condo near the river, an older house or a parking lot at the marina.

Getting to Stuart: bridges, highways and ZIP codes

Stuart sits on the St. Lucie River, about 8 to 11 miles south of central Port St. Lucie depending on where you start. Most trips take us 15 to 20 minutes down US 1 and over the Roosevelt Bridge, the mile-long bridge that opened in 1996 to replace the old twin drawbridges. The Old Roosevelt Bridge, a low drawbridge built in 1964, still carries Dixie Highway traffic across the river.

Inside the city we mostly drive US 1 (Federal Highway), Kanner Highway (State Road 76), which heads west past I-95 at exit 101, State Road 714 and State Road A1A. Just north across the river is North River Shores, and A1A heads east over the water to Sewall’s Point. Stuart took the slogan Sailfish Capital of the World in 1957, and boating is a big part of life here.

Business lockouts and door hardware in downtown Stuart

Downtown Stuart covers about 13 blocks along the river, with more than 50 locally owned restaurants, bars and shops. Osceola Street and Flagler Avenue are the main streets.

Storefront lockouts

A key snaps off in the door before opening, or the last person out took the only key. We open storefront doors with damage-free methods first and can rekey the same visit if a key has gone missing.

Restaurant back doors and panic bars

Rear service doors get slammed all day. Panic bars fall out of adjustment and the outside trim stops latching. We repair or replace exit devices so the door closes and locks every time.

Medical and professional offices

Offices near Cleveland Clinic Martin North Hospital on SE Hospital Avenue, or along South Kanner Highway, often need locks on file rooms, staff-only doors and a clear plan for who holds which key.

Master keys for shared buildings

When a landlord needs one key for every suite and each tenant needs a key for only their own, a master key system does both. We plan it door by door with you.

Keypads and fob entry

For a staff door that too many people use, a keypad or fob reader means you delete one code when someone leaves instead of chasing down a key.

Do older downtown buildings need different lock work?

Often, yes. In 2026 the Downtown Stuart Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its buildings date mostly from the early to mid-1900s and include the Lyric Theatre, which opened in 1926 as a silent movie house, the Feroe Building and the Post Office Arcade. The Stuart Heritage Museum now fills the old Stuart Feed Store building, which dates to 1901.

Buildings from that era often have wood doors, mortise locks or hardware that has been swapped out several times. A mortise lock sits inside a pocket cut into the door, so you cannot just drop in a hardware store deadbolt. Wood also swells in summer humidity, and the latch stops lining up with the strike.

Old hardware is not a problem for us, but it changes the job. Many times the fix is moving the strike plate or rekeying the old mortise cylinder, not tearing out the lock. We tell you which one your door needs before any work starts. If you rent your space, check with your landlord before changing the outside look of a door.

Condos and houses in Stuart need different things

Condo and apartment owners

  • Your unit door is usually yours to rekey. Lobby, pool and gate locks normally belong to the association.
  • For shared doors, we need the board or manager to approve the work before we touch anything.
  • Rekey after a tenant moves out, or when you come back for the season and are not sure who still has a key.
  • Census estimates count more than 1,600 Stuart homes held for seasonal or part-time use, so this comes up often.

House owners

  • Homes from before 1940 may still have original doors, where a new deadbolt needs careful fitting.
  • Houses from the 1970s and 1980s tend to end up with mixed locks from years of one-off changes. We can rekey them to one key.
  • Sliding glass doors and the garage entry door get forgotten in a rekey. Count them in.
  • Smart locks and keypads fit most standard doors. See our smart lock installation page.

Can a locksmith open my car at a Stuart marina?

We can get you back in. Sunset Bay Marina, right next to downtown, has 198 wet slips and 66 moorings and is one of the last stops on the Okeechobee Waterway, so its lots see local boaters and visitors on their way across the state.

The usual reasons are keys left on the boat, a fob that went in the water, or a fob battery that quit in the heat. We open most cars without damage and can usually cut and program a replacement key right there for most makes. German makes are the exception. We do not service Porsche, Audi, BMW, Mini, Volkswagen or Mercedes-Benz.

If your fob got wet, hang on to it and have the year, make and model ready. Our car key finder shows what kind of key your car uses. Boaters in Manatee Pocket can check our Port Salerno page.

We do not do hurricane shutters

Between 1871 and 2005, 19 hurricanes passed through Stuart, three of them, Frances, Jeanne and Wilma, in just 2004 and 2005. We do not sell, install or repair hurricane shutters or panels. We can fix a door lock that will not latch after a storm, and rekey if contractors or neighbors held your keys while you were away.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Can you open my downtown Stuart shop early in the morning?

Yes. We start at 7am Sunday through Friday, so we can often get you in before you open. Have something that ties you to the business, like your lease or Business Tax Receipt, or have the owner on the phone. We quote the total before we drive down, and we try damage-free methods first so the door is fine for the day.

Do you work on the old locks in Stuart's historic downtown buildings?

Yes. Older storefronts often have mortise locks or wood doors that swell in humid weather. Many times we can rekey the existing cylinder or adjust the strike instead of replacing the whole lock. If the hardware is worn out, we show you options that fit the door. Check with your landlord before changing how the outside of the door looks.

My car keys are on the boat and I'm locked out at the marina. Can you help?

Yes, we handle car lockouts at Stuart marinas for most makes. We will ask for your ID and proof the car is yours, like the registration in your name, before we open it. If the key went overboard, we can usually cut and program a new one on site. German makes like Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, BMW, Mini and Mercedes-Benz are outside what we do.

Can I rekey my Stuart condo without asking the association?

Your own unit door, usually yes, as long as you can show you own the unit. Shared doors like the lobby, pool gate or trash room belong to the association, so the manager or board has to approve that work. Read your condo documents if you are not sure, since some buildings keep a master key for the unit doors too.

Do you install or repair hurricane shutters in Stuart?

No, shutters are not our work. We are locksmiths only. After a storm we can help with door locks that no longer latch, deadbolts that bind because a door shifted, and rekeys if your keys were handed to contractors or neighbors while you were gone.

Are you open on Saturdays in Stuart?

No. Saturday is our day off. Sunday through Thursday we run from 7am until 11pm, and on Friday from 7am until 5pm. If you know a job is coming, like a rekey after a sale or a new panic bar, call during the week and we can set a time that suits you.
